Prevent Summer Slide
'Stop The Costly 'Summer Slide.' by Neale Godfrey, Contributor writer for Forbes talks about the research and results of children and young adults (first grade to age 22) and how summer away from school contributes to students falling behind.
Godfrey says that: "..the researchers concluded that two-thirds of the 9th grade reading achievement gap can be explained by [lack of] access to summer learning opportunities during elementary school.”
She continues, "As if this is not scary enough, the report goes on to note another study conducted by the RAND Corporation that says, "elementary students’ performance fall by about a month during the summer, but the decline is far worse for lower-income students. Most disturbing, it appears that summer learning loss is cumulative…”
To combat the “summer slide” engage children in activities such as, plant a garden, explore such as zoos, museums, and other places in your community. The third suggestion is share or learn a skill.
